In what may be the most significant diplomatic breakthrough in modern Middle Eastern history, President Trump has secured a deal for the Gaza hostages release that will bring captives home within 72 hours. Jim Pfaff of The Conservative Caucus joined TCC to discuss this historic moment, which began with Secretary of State Marco Rubio passing a note to President Trump and culminated in emotional phone calls to hostage families. The achievement represents the culmination of years of strategic relationship-building that started with the Abraham Accords during Trump’s first term.

Topics Covered

The Historic Gaza Hostages Release Breakthrough

The announcement of the Gaza hostages release represents a watershed moment in international diplomacy. After two years of anguish for families wondering about the fate of their loved ones, President Trump’s negotiating team has secured their freedom and safe return home, expected as early as Monday or Tuesday of next week.

“This is historic beyond historic. If this thing plays out the way that it is presently planned to play out and with the steps that Donald Trump has put together already on this, I’ve been around for a long time. Never will have seen anything like this in terms of the peace in Israel.”
— Jim Pfaff, President, The Conservative Caucus

The deal’s announcement came after Secretary of State Marco Rubio passed a note to President Trump, setting in motion a carefully orchestrated series of communications with regional leaders and hostage families. President Trump personally called each family one by one from the Oval Office late into the night, delivering news that many had waited years to hear.

Photos of the families’ reactions captured the raw emotion of the moment—tears of joy, disbelief, and overwhelming relief that their nightmare was finally ending. Some of these hostages are newlyweds from 2023, with young children at home who have grown up without knowing their parents. Others have spouses who have maintained daily social media vigils, begging for their loved ones’ release.

An Unprecedented Diplomatic Achievement

Pfaff placed the Gaza hostages release in historical context, comparing Trump’s diplomatic prowess to previous American presidents known for international relations success. “We really haven’t had a president this effective at international relations possibly in my lifetime,” Pfaff explained. “Although you would give some credit to Ronald Reagan and some of the things that he was able to accomplish during his administration in the Cold War.”

The foundation for this breakthrough was laid during Trump’s first administration with the Abraham Accords—a framework that fundamentally reshaped Middle Eastern diplomacy by normalizing relations between Israel and several Arab nations. That groundwork proved essential to creating the trust and communication channels necessary for the current Gaza hostages release agreement.

The Abraham Accords Foundation

The Abraham Accords, signed during Trump’s first term, established diplomatic relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco. This framework created unprecedented cooperation in the region and laid the groundwork for the current peace negotiations. Trump’s historic trip to the Middle East earlier in 2025 built upon these relationships to make the Gaza hostages release possible.

Pfaff noted that Trump’s approach represents a “tour de force of international relations” that will serve as a model for future negotiations. “If you want to learn how international relations should go, how negotiations with other countries go, this is a model not just for right now, but it’ll be a model” for years to come, he emphasized.

The Key Players Behind the Peace Deal

The successful negotiation of the Gaza hostages release required coordination among several key figures in the Trump administration. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance played crucial roles in the final stages, providing direct authority from the highest levels of government—a factor that Pfaff identified as making “a huge difference” in negotiations.

However, two names emerged as particularly critical to the deal’s success: Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff. Kushner, who served on President Trump’s staff during the first administration and was instrumental in the Abraham Accords, came out of private business to lend his expertise and relationships to the effort. Pfaff noted that Kushner is performing this work with no government compensation, driven purely by commitment to the cause.

“He definitely knows all the players in the region. He had already proven his ability to connect with them, to talk with them, to work through the issues. He and Witkoff play that negotiator role and both of them have done a brilliant job of making sure all the difficult pieces of the puzzle were addressed.”
— Jim Pfaff, on Jared Kushner’s role

Steve Witkoff, described as “not your typical State Department person,” brought a fresh perspective to Middle Eastern negotiations. His unconventional approach, combined with the authority Trump granted him, allowed for creative problem-solving in a region where Pfaff noted negotiators are essentially “herding cats.”

The Arab nations in the region have undergone significant transformations since Israel’s founding in 1948, with some adopting more liberal policies particularly regarding women’s rights. However, historical tensions and support for Palestinian causes created complex obstacles that required skilled navigation—precisely what Kushner and Witkoff provided.

Emotional Reunions for Hostage Families

The human dimension of the Gaza hostages release cannot be overstated. For two years, families have lived with uncertainty about whether their loved ones were safe, physically fit, or even alive. Many hostages were killed during their captivity, making the survival and impending return of these individuals all the more precious.

President Trump’s personal phone calls to the families demonstrated his commitment to the human element of diplomacy. Video footage showed him with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick making calls to groups of family members, capturing moments of pure joy and relief.

“Think about having a family member as a hostage in this situation for two years and not knowing what their physical, you know, how whether they were physically fit, whether they were safe, whether they were going to be killed,” Pfaff reflected. “It’s breathtaking. It brings you to tears and it’s just amazing the dedication not just of Donald Trump who really has led this effort from our end, but everyone that he has in his cabinet.”

The anticipation of reunion is particularly poignant for those who were newlyweds when taken hostage in 2023. Their children have grown up without them, and spouses have maintained daily social media presences pleading for their release. The images of families learning about the Gaza hostages release—showing excitement, tears, and children being told their parents are coming home—captured a moment of pure human triumph over adversity.

President Trump plans to travel to the Middle East as early as the weekend to personally oversee the hostages’ return, underscoring the priority his administration has placed on this mission.

The Democrat Government Shutdown Crisis

While the Gaza hostages release represents a foreign policy triumph, domestic challenges continue as the government shutdown enters its eighth day. Democrats have refused to pass a clean Continuing Resolution, leaving federal workers and military personnel facing financial hardship.

The situation becomes critical on October 15th, when military paychecks will be held up if the shutdown continues. Speaker Mike Johnson highlighted the human cost of the Democratic obstruction, noting that young airmen and soldiers deployed around the world defending American freedom have left families at home dependent on those paychecks.

“I come from a big military district. I have Barksdale Air Force Base, the home of Global Strike Command, is there. I have Fort Polk, the Joint Readiness Training Center. We have young airmen and soldiers deployed around the world right now defending our freedom. They’ve left their young families at home. They’re dependent upon that check on October 15th.”
— Speaker Mike Johnson

Johnson emphasized that the issue is not about year-end healthcare policy decisions, as Democrats have claimed, but rather “a clean, simple CR” to keep the government open. He called on journalists to demand answers from Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer about why he continues to play “political games” while military families face financial uncertainty.

Shutdown Impact

The government shutdown is affecting multiple critical areas:

  • Military personnel will not receive paychecks after October 15th
  • WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) nutrition programs are suspended
  • Air traffic control workers are not showing up, causing flight delays
  • Border patrol agents face payment disruptions

The shutdown adds another layer of complexity to an already challenging domestic situation, as federal law enforcement faces violent resistance in cities like Chicago while Democrats withhold funding for basic government operations.

Chicago: Ground Zero for Antifa Violence

While the Gaza hostages release dominated international headlines, Dan Lyman of Border Hawk News provided a disturbing ground-level report from Chicago, where federal immigration enforcement operations have descended into chaos. The city has become a war zone where Antifa members and local residents are conducting coordinated attacks on ICE agents and Border Patrol officers.

Lyman’s team spent over seven days on the ground in Chicago, witnessing conditions that “continued getting worse and worse as the local residents, the local officials continue to push back against federal law enforcement.” The situation has deteriorated to the point where approximately 500 National Guard soldiers have been deployed to protect ICE facilities and agents.

The violence in Chicago differs from the Antifa-dominated protests in Portland. While Portland’s ICE facility has been under siege from aggressive Antifa contingents since the COVID era, Chicago’s resistance involves local residents—many with connections to illegal immigration—actively sabotaging federal authorities through what appear to be pre-planned ambushes.

Coordinated Attacks on Federal ICE Agents

The most alarming incident occurred during Operation Midway Blitz, a targeted enforcement operation in Chicago’s predominantly Hispanic Brighton Park neighborhood. What should have been a routine operation transformed into “total chaos” when locals spotted federal vehicles and alerted neighbors and activists.

Lyman’s reporter likened the scene to the “Blackhawk Down” situation in Mogadishu, where soldiers found themselves suddenly surrounded by hostile forces. “You had hundreds of people turn out almost instantaneously running out of residences, pulling up in cars, coming out of restaurants and proceeding to pelt the federal officers there with any projectile they could get their hands on,” Lyman reported.

“Our reporter likened it to the situation from Blackhawk Down where the helicopter goes down in Mogadishu and all of a sudden it’s like the entire city converges on those soldiers and basically puts them under siege.”
— Dan Lyman, Border Hawk News

Federal officers responded with tear gas and attempted to evacuate the area, but encountered an even larger mob waiting on the main drag through Brighton Park. The unmarked federal vehicles—typically SUVs and trucks with flashing lights—were pelted with projectiles as they passed through.

The violence escalated to vehicular attacks. In one incident, approximately ten vehicles boxed in a Border Patrol vehicle and rammed it. One participant in that ambush was armed with a handgun and was shot several times by agents. She survived, and she and another participant were arrested—only to be released back onto the streets pending trial.

A separate ramming incident, widely circulated on social media platform X, showed an SUV deliberately ramming a Border Patrol pickup truck from behind. Border Hawk News reporters on the ground wore protective gear; one reporter took a projectile directly to the helmet that could have caused serious injury without protection.

Local Officials Enabling Lawlessness

Perhaps most disturbing is the active obstruction by local Chicago officials. Mayor Brandon Johnson has established what amount to “anti-ICE zones” in the city, creating de facto no-go areas for federal law enforcement. This represents a more serious threat than the organic no-go zones that developed in Europe, because it involves elected officials deliberately creating breakaway jurisdictions that refuse to cooperate with federal authority.

Audio from a 911 call obtained by Border Hawk News revealed the extent of the stand-down orders. When federal agents called for backup from Chicago Police after being ambushed, dispatchers initially sent units to respond. However, the Chief of Patrol then ordered all units to “clear out” and not respond to the federal agents’ location, leaving them vulnerable to attack.

911 Call Transcript Excerpt

Dispatcher: “For the units responding to 39th place and Kenzie. If you guys can start heading there as quick as you can and then just hold tight for instructions.”

Chief of Patrol (999): “Clear everybody up. We’re not responding over there.”

Dispatcher: “Per the chief of patrol, we have all the units that for 999, chief of patrol said, all units clear out from there. We’re not sending anybody over to that location.”

The Broadview ICE processing facility has been under near-daily siege since Operation Midway Blitz launched a month ago. Protests, sometimes occurring twice daily, have included the discovery of an improvised explosive device in a backpack near the facility and the arrest of multiple armed protesters.

Lyman noted that Illinois State Police finally arrived after two particularly violent protests and began establishing order, showing more willingness to cooperate with federal authorities than Chicago Police. However, aggressive demonstrators continue to appear outside the facility daily, and “all it takes is one crazy to wreak havoc in that area.”

The situation has forced the federal government to deploy increasing force to Chicago. “If ICE agents can’t depend on local authorities to defend them, to protect them, to protect their facility in said jurisdiction, then they’re going to have to bring in their own people from the federal government to do that for them,” Lyman explained. “You’re just going to see more and more troops and more and more agents on the ground in these cities if the administration continues to beef things up.”

Mayor Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker have accused the Trump administration of instigating conflict, but Lyman countered that if local police worked in conjunction with federal authorities, “these things can be handled more at the local level.” Instead, by abdicating their responsibility and allowing chaos to reign, local officials have forced the federal government’s hand in deploying military force to American streets.
