“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America,
and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God,
indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
Today is Flag Day — the day we honor the red, white and blue and all it represents.
You’ve proudly recited the Pledge of Allegiance, flown the flag at home, worn it on a uniform, shed a tear seeing it cover the casket of a soldier, saluted it, and cheered it at a game.
Perhaps you even remember the first time you took the Pledge.
Like most Americans, you know some about the history of our flag. From crude flags carried in the battle for our independence to Betsy Ross’ masterpiece — and to today’s 50-star flag, there’s something about our flag that always raises pride in our hearts.
What Does the Pledge of Allegiance Mean?
“I pledge allegiance” — A promise of loyalty to your country.
“To the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands” — The flag symbolizes the United States and our constitutional republican form of government.
“One nation under God” — recognizes our Judeo-Christian Founding and the values upon which our nation was founded and continues.
“Indivisible” — Our country is a single, united nation that cannot be broken apart.
“With liberty and justice for all” — A promise of freedom and honest courts for all Americans.
Why We Love the Flag
It represents the beauty of the liberties it embodies. But we don’t just love the flag for itself. We put our hand on our hearts in honor of the principles behind the flag. Our liberty. Our God-given rights. Our Founding Fathers who created the best form of governance in all history — one that has survived 250 years and may survive another 250 and another.
Some on the left desecrate our flag, but in oppressed countries you’ll see people honor our flag as the symbol of freedom. You can see it being waved today in countries like Iran and Venezuela.
Moments Etched in Our Minds
Moments of history with our flag are etched in our minds.
The Star Spangled Banner that inspired Francis Scott Key to write our national anthem. Our soldiers raising the flag on Iwo Jima. Olympic athletes holding our flag as they win medals. Our astronauts raising the flag on the Moon. And raising the flag at the wreckage of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
But it’s often the little moments that bring a tear. Your child reciting the Pledge in school. A Boy or Girl Scout saluting it. The flag patch on a soldier’s uniform. Kids carrying the flag at hometown parades.
Born on Flag Day
Born on Flag Day? Yes — Flag Day is also President Trump’s 80th birthday.
On this Flag Day — on this 250th Anniversary of America — let us rededicate ourselves to defend the liberties it represents and educate the next generations to its history and meaning.
God bless our flag and God bless the United States of America!

- Take the lead at public meetings in reciting the Pledge.
- Cheer the flag at games — and stand for the National Anthem.
